In the first half of our
concert, we are proud to feature a selection of delightful Christmas
carols by "Mr. Christmas Carol" British composer John Rutter, who
is considered to be the most prolific living composer of Christmas
music. Rutter’s ability to create a sublime listening experience for the
music lover is uncanny.
As well, American composer’s
Morten Lauridsen’s gorgeous setting of O Magnum Mysterium,
a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas will be performed.
Many musical settings of this chant are in existence, however, this
particular treatment by Lauridsen is breathtaking.
We are also excited to feature
in this first half, Sleep, by popular American composer
Eric Whitacre. A spectacular performance of this piece was realized
in the form of a virtual choir, which began in May of 2009 as a simple
experiment in social media. Two thousand and fifty-two performances
submitted by singers from fifty-eight countries were gathered into the
largest assembly of singers in online history to culminate in a virtual
performance of Sleep, which since has become an internet
phenomenon.
All together, these musical
selections are guaranteed to create a meditative and reflective
listening experience, which will transport the listener to a place of
harmony and beauty.
For the second half of our
programme, hold onto your hats! Be prepared to be blown away with
American composer Daniel Pinkham’s most famous choral work,
Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra) scored for chorus, double
brass choir and organ.
Then, Bow Valley Chorus’
musical extravaganza will be completed with John Rutter’s
touching and thrilling three-movement Gloria
